Status quo of China olive oil market
According to statistics from China Customs, there has been 1,225 tons of olive oil imported to China in January and February this year. The value of imported olive oil totaled 4.18 million USD. The growth of both quantity and value increased by 60%!
Most imported olive oil is from Spain and Italy.
In 2012, Spain has gained 62.93 million Euro from olive oil exportation to China, increased by 108%. China has already become the sixth biggest importer for Spanish olive oil and Spain is also the biggest exporter to China, taking 57.54% of the market. It is estimated that China market will increase by 100% in 2013 and become the biggest importer for olive oil.
Although China has a big market, the climate of China is not good for olive production. All the famous brands of olive oil in China are from other countries.
What’s more, Chinese consumers already have some knowledge about olive oil. Survey also shows that brands from Spain and Italy are highly recognized by Chinese consumers.
